Program Module 01

First Empire Cavalry Maneuvers & Equine Field Drills

The cavalry of the First French Empire captured the imagination of nineteenth-century Europe through its unprecedented mobility, disciplined shock tactics, and flamboyant uniforms. Under the leadership of Marshal Joachim Murat, cavalry divisions executed sweeping tactical maneuvers that altered the outcome of historic engagements such as Austerlitz, Jena, and Eylau. Our cavalry living history program recreates these intricate mounted formations with historical fidelity, scientific rigor, and deep respect for equine welfare.

Authentic Horsemanship and Tactile Demonstrations

Our volunteer riders practice classical equitation techniques drawn directly from nineteenth-century manuals, including the works of François Baucher and the Cadre Noir of Saumur. Visitors to our public field encampments witness firsthand:

  • Saddle and Tack Architecture: Detailed explanations of the Hungarian-style wooden saddletrees, sheepskin shabraques, brass-mounted bridles, and specialized cavalry bits designed for precise one-handed rein control during military maneuvers.
  • Cadenced Squad Drills: Demonstrations of trot, canter, and echelon formations executed in tight ranks, showing how auditory trumpet calls communicated complex tactical commands over vast outdoor distances.
  • Camp Veterinary Logistics: Interactive sessions displaying period veterinary field instruments, grooming routines, hoof care, and nutritional management required to sustain thousands of mounts on distant campaigns.

Every equestrian display is conducted with certified safety perimeters, professional equine handlers, and strict animal-welfare protocols. Spectators of all ages are invited to approach the picket lines between drills, talk with riders, and examine the craftsmanship of authentic leather harness gear.

Program Module 02

Caroline Murat Court Life, Salons & Neoclassical Arts

Too often, public perception of the Napoleonic era is dominated exclusively by military battles, obscuring the extraordinary flowering of civil society, administrative institution-building, and artistic innovation that characterized early nineteenth-century France and Italy. Our Civil Court Life program illuminates the influential household and cultural salon of Caroline Bonaparte Murat, Queen of Naples and Grand Duchess of Berg.

Revitalizing 19th-Century Diplomacy and Domestic Culture

Presented in historic municipal venues, châteaux courtyards, and local cultural centers, this module reconstructs the elegant atmosphere of an imperial reception. Volunteer interpreters in historically certified Empire-style high-waisted muslin dresses, cashmere shawls, and diplomatic uniforms engage audiences through:

  • Neoclassical Salon Protocol: Demonstrations of formal court greetings, fan etiquette, diplomatic gift exchanges, and the civic roles played by women in European statecraft.
  • Period Musical & Literary Recitals: Live performances of early nineteenth-century salon music featuring the romance, harp, and fortepiano compositions of contemporary masters.
  • Archaeological & Educational Patronage: Educational lectures detailing Caroline Murat’s groundbreaking funding of the Pompeii excavations and her establishment of the Boarding School for Young Girls (Maison d'Éducation) in Naples.

This civilian dimension provides an indispensable balance to our military demonstrations, ensuring that families, young women, and cultural enthusiasts encounter the comprehensive social and intellectual tapestry of the era.

Program Module 03

Historical Artisanal Craftsmanship & Heritage Workshops

Before the advent of steam-powered mechanized factories, every item of daily utility—from a soldier’s ammunition pouch to an aristocrat’s embroidered waistcoat—required hundreds of hours of skilled manual labor. Our Heritage Workshops preserve and teach these nearly forgotten artisanal traditions through hands-on participatory masterclasses.

Hands-On Modules for the Public

  • Master Leatherworking & Saddlery: Participants learn saddle stitching with two needles and waxed linen thread, edge burnishing with natural beeswax, and vegetable tanning chemistry.
  • Imperial Tailoring & Uniform Cutting: Exploration of the 1812 Bardin uniform regulations, hand-drafting patterns on wool broadcloth, and hand-sewing pewter buttonholes.
  • Cartography & Quill Calligraphy: Hands-on instruction in cutting goose quills, mixing iron gall ink, and drafting topographic military maps based on the Cassini survey.
  • Blacksmithing & Button Foundry: Demonstrations of small-scale sand casting for regimental buttons, belt buckles, and harness hardware using charcoal-fired forges.

All workshop materials, tools, and protective equipment are provided free of charge by our association, subsidized by regional cultural grants. Participants take home their handcrafted historical pieces as lasting mementos of their creative engagement.

Program Module 04

Youth Discovery & School Immersion Partnerships

Cultivating curiosity and critical thinking among youth is the primary educational objective of Association Groupe Maison Civile et Militaire Murat. Our school immersion program brings living history units directly into primary schools, collèges, and lycées throughout Eure-et-Loir, Ile-de-France, and the Centre-Val de Loire region.

Curriculum-Aligned Pedagogical Units

Designed in alignment with the national educational history curriculum, our certified volunteer educators provide turnkey pedagogical kits. A typical school visit includes three rotated workshops:

  • The Life of a 19th-Century Conscript: Students unpack an authentic wooden knapsack (havresac), handle ration biscuits, examine wooden canteens, and understand the daily physical hardships of soldiers on campaign.
  • Napoleonic Civil Reforms: An interactive debate exploring the origins of the Civil Code, the metric measurement system, the creation of high schools (lycées), and the cadastral land registry.
  • Battlefield Medicine & Larrey's Flying Ambulances: A profound historical examination of early medical humanitarianism, showing how Dominique Jean Larrey revolutionized triage by treating wounded soldiers regardless of nationality.

Completely Non-Monetized School Access

"Our educational school visits are provided free of charge to public institutions. We do not solicit donations from students or parents, ensuring that every pupil enjoys equal access to historical education."

Safety Framework & Technical Logistics for Public Assemblies

Executing public historical reenactments and equestrian demonstrations requires uncompromising adherence to French safety regulations governing public gatherings (Établissements Recevant du Public - ERP) and outdoor municipal events. Our Association Safety Directorate coordinates directly with municipal police services, departmental fire authorities (SDIS 28), and the Prefecture of Eure-et-Loir prior to every deployment.

All equestrian drills are cordoned off behind double security barricades with minimum safety buffers of ten meters between spectators and galloping horses. Our volunteer marshals, easily identifiable in official non-profit brassards, manage crowd circulation and ensure that children remain behind safety perimeters. All period tents are secured with reinforced storm pegs, and open-flame camp cooking is restricted to certified fire pits supervised continuously by trained members equipped with modern fire extinguishing apparatus concealed within period wooden crates.

Comprehensive Pedagogical Dossiers for Teachers

To ensure that our school visits deliver lasting pedagogical value rather than ephemeral spectacle, our educational committee provides teachers with comprehensive digital dossiers two weeks prior to the scheduled event. These materials include primary document excerpts from Napoleonic conscription registries, facsimile letters written by regional soldiers from the 28th department, map-reading exercises charting the Danube and Vistula campaign routes, and guided discussion prompts regarding the societal impacts of the Civil Code.

Following the living history visit, teachers receive evaluation templates and creative writing prompts allowing students to reflect upon what they touched, observed, and learned. By anchoring experiential living history within formal pedagogical curricula, our association helps educators stimulate enduring historical curiosity and critical reasoning among students of all academic backgrounds.

Regional Living History Rallies & European Heritage Days

In addition to our standalone municipal presentations, the association actively coordinates and participates in multi-troupe living history rallies during the European Heritage Days (Journées Européennes du Patrimoine). Collaborating with kindred non-profit historical preservation societies from France, Belgium, Italy, and across Europe, we assemble panoramic encampments representing thousands of historic trades, infantry regiments, and medical corps.

These regional rallies draw thousands of visitors from surrounding rural communities and metropolitan areas, creating immense cultural vitality for local municipalities while remaining completely non-commercial and free of admission fees. Through these large-scale civic celebrations, our association reaffirms the power of shared cultural heritage to unite diverse communities in peaceful historical reflection.
