Why Volunteer with Association Groupe Maison Civile et Militaire Murat?
Living history is powered by human enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, and generosity of spirit. At Association Groupe Maison Civile et Militaire Murat (RNA W281009580, SIREN 881559082), our volunteers do not merely dress in period attire; they become cultural ambassadors who help the public discover the complex realities of nineteenth-century French society.
We operate entirely within the statutory framework of the French Association Loi 1901. As a volunteer member, you will join a supportive community rooted in Bailleau-le-Pin and spreading across central France. Every hour you contribute helps introduce children to authentic craftsmanship, preserves rare textile and equestrian traditions, and maintains collective memory in our regional municipalities.
Four Pathways for Civic Involvement
Whether you bring specialized technical skills or simply a sincere desire to learn and contribute, our association offers diverse, meaningful roles tailored to your interests:
1. Living History Reenactor (Cavalry & Infantry)
Step directly into historical encampments. Under the guidance of seasoned mentors, you will learn authentic nineteenth-century military drills, marching cadences, camp setup, and equipment maintenance. Our association assists new reenactors with uniform loan programs, historical patterns, and safety instruction, making participation accessible regardless of prior reenacting experience.
2. Caroline Murat Salon & Civilian Living Interpreter
Bring the vibrant domestic, artistic, and administrative life of the Napoleonic epoch to public view. Volunteers depict diplomats, ladies-in-waiting, musicians, writers, and administrative secretaries. Participate in court etiquette workshops, period dance rehearsals, and literary readings that illuminate the civil triumphs of the era.
3. Heritage Artisan & Craftsperson
Apply or develop skills in traditional leatherworking, saddlery, wool uniform tailoring, brass casting, or quill calligraphy. Work with authentic vegetable-tanned leathers and hand-spun wool broadcloth to restore association artifacts and demonstrate heritage techniques during public municipal festivals.
4. Educational Assistant & School Immersion Coordinator
Assist our certified pedagogical team in delivering free classroom presentations to primary schools and middle schools. Help organize hands-on artifact discovery stations, supervise tactile learning sessions for schoolchildren, and assist teachers in implementing historical curricula.
5. Equine Care & Paddock Support Assistant
Support our equestrian detachment by assisting with horse grooming, field paddock setup, tack conditioning, and safety marshaling during mounted drills. Prior equestrian experience is welcomed but not mandatory; experienced handlers provide rigorous ground safety training.
Ethical Non-Profit Membership Principles
"Volunteering with Association Murat is entirely non-commercial. No salaries or wages are paid. All annual membership dues (€35 for individual members, €50 for family memberships) are 100% reinvested into shared safety equipment, insurance coverage, and historical textile conservation."

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Membership
Do I need to own my own uniform or horse to participate?
No. The association maintains an inventory of historically accurate uniforms, shakos, and civilian gowns that are loaned to apprentice members during their first year of participation. For equestrian drills, the association collaborates with certified partner stables and provides shared tack. We prioritize dedication and safety over personal equipment ownership.
How much time commitment is expected?
We recognize that volunteers have personal, professional, and family obligations. Active members typically attend one monthly workshop or training session in Bailleau-le-Pin and participate in two to four public weekend encampments during the spring and summer season. We welcome whatever degree of time you can generously contribute.
Is there any minimum age for volunteers?
Adults of all ages are welcomed. Youth aged 14 to 17 may participate in our artisanal workshops and civilian demonstrations with written parental authorization and under adult member supervision.
The Volunteer Onboarding & Mentorship Journey
Entering the world of living history can occasionally feel intimidating due to the wealth of historical detail and technical vocabulary. To ensure an enriching, welcoming experience, every newly enrolled volunteer is paired with an experienced member mentor (parrain bénévole).
During your first three months, your mentor guides you through our archival reference library, helps you select an appropriate historical civilian or military persona consistent with your interests, and assists you in sizing and tailoring your initial garments. You are never expected to purchase costly gear; rather, our communal workshop in Bailleau-le-Pin hosts regular tailoring and leatherworking evenings where seasoned craftspeople teach you how to fabricate your own equipment step by step.
Civic Rights & Protections Guaranteed to Volunteers
In strict compliance with French statutory standards governing non-profit volunteerism, Association Groupe Maison Civile et Militaire Murat accords comprehensive institutional protections to every active participant:
- Full Civil Liability & Bodily Injury Coverage: All members in good statutory standing are covered under our master group insurance policy during all official workshops, rehearsals, transit convoys, and public living history festivals.
- Formal Attestation of Voluntary Service (Bénévolat Valorisé): High school and university students, job seekers, and career changers can receive formal institutional certificates detailing the hours, pedagogical competencies, and technical craftsmanship acquired during association service.
- Democratic Voice and Voting Rights: Upon completing one year of active participation, all volunteers gain full voting rights within our Sovereign General Assembly, ensuring that operational decisions reflect the collective will of our community.
- Solidarity Carpooling & Logistical Support: Because our members travel from across Eure-et-Loir, Ile-de-France, and neighboring departments, our secretariat coordinates shared non-profit carpools and collective meal preparation to eliminate financial burdens on individual participants.
Workshops Calendar & Communal Life in Bailleau-le-Pin
Beyond public festivals, the heart of our association beats in our weekend communal gatherings. Twice a month, our depot at 16 Rue de Chartres transforms into an active hive of heritage preservation. In the main hall, tailors cut wool patterns and hand-wax thread; in the courtyard, farriers inspect iron stirrups and condition saddle leather; in the study room, researchers examine digitized microfilms from the Vincennes archives.
These working weekends conclude with a traditional shared communal meal where members discuss history, exchange research findings, and enjoy genuine companionship. It is this warm, egalitarian spirit that makes our association not merely a living history troupe, but a true civic family dedicated to the public good.
